Global Coal Market Restructuring Accelerates — ICEE 2026 Invites You to Jakarta This May

Release time:2026-03-20

Hot on the heels of a weekend that saw international thermal coal prices approach the $140/ton mark—hitting a one-year high—the global coal market is entering a new cycle. Driven by shifting US policy expectations and tightening supply signals from Indonesia, the industry is bracing for transformation.

Recent discussions by Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources regarding 2026 coal production quotas have captured global attention. While final policy details are still under consideration, the direction is clear: "volume control and quality focus" are becoming the new priorities in Indonesia's energy transition. This shift will significantly increase demand for efficient extraction technologies, green processing solutions, and downstream industrial applications.

Against this backdrop, the 2026 Indonesia Coal & Energy Expo (ICEE 2026) will be held from May 11-13, 2026, at the Jakarta International Expo. The expo serves as a direct gateway for Chinese enterprises to engage with Indonesia's evolving market needs and navigate the opportunities arising from this industrial restructuring.

Indonesia's Coal Market: Accelerating Transition Creates a New Blue Ocean

As the world's largest coal exporter and third-largest producer, Indonesia holds 3.2% of global coal reserves. According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Indonesia exported 540 million tons of coal in 2025, with production remaining at elevated levels. This substantial existing market remains a fundamental driver for Chinese technology and equipment exports.

More significantly, the Indonesian government is aggressively pushing the coal industry toward downstream processing and green mining. In January, the government mandated the acceleration of 18 downstream industrial projects, with coal gasification prioritized at the national level. This top-down strategy creates fresh opportunities for Chinese enterprises in coal chemical processing and high-end equipment manufacturing. High-value segments—including smart mining equipment, electrification solutions, coal washing, and coal-to-DME (dimethyl ether)—are all actively seeking mature, deployable technologies.

China-Indonesia Cooperation: Complementary Strengths with Strong Policy Support

Under the Belt and Road Initiative, China-Indonesia energy cooperation continues to deepen. China remains the largest importer of Indonesian coal, bringing in approximately 211 million tons in 2025—accounting for about 43% of China's total coal imports, according to Chinese Customs data. Meanwhile, China's globally competitive expertise in clean coal utilization and smart mine construction aligns closely with Indonesia's industrial upgrade needs.

In February, the Indonesian government signaled a potential increase in the Domestic Market Obligation (DMO) ratio to 30% to secure feedstock supply for downstream industries. This anticipated policy shift will further pressure local miners to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and extend their value chains—opening additional avenues for Chinese technology exports and project collaboration.

ICEE 2026: Full-Industry Expo for Precision Networking

As the premier event covering Indonesia's entire coal and energy value chain, ICEE 2026 is expanding. The expo will feature 25,000 sqm of exhibition space, host over 500 global enterprises, and attract more than 20,000 professional visitors. It continues to receive strong support from the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and is co-organized by: Indonesian Coal Mining Association(APBI-ICMA)、COAL - CCPIT、Indonesian Mining Services Association(ASPINDO)、Energy Industry Research Institute of the China Institute for Innovation & Development Strategy, co-organized by the Indonesia China Business Council and Chindo Business Center. This structure ensures seamless connections between policy makers and industry players.

Concurrent high-level events include the Indonesia-China Coal & Energy Conference, Indonesia Clean Coal and Green Mining Conference, and Indonesia Coal Conference on Underground Mining and Downstream Processing. Officials from Indonesia's Ministry of Energy, leading mining companies, and industry experts will gather to discuss market trends and provide first-hand policy intelligence to participants.
